  • The Look

    by: Posted

Today’s blog post is a letter written by Jessica Cook, a model and actress who was featured on the cover for the Dec. 2011 The Look. Jessica shares with us what Mary Kay has meant for her personally and professionally.

I just wanted to say thank you for choosing me to be the cover model and commercial model for Mary Kay this year. I would have never thought in a MILLION years that I’d be the beauty model for Mary Kay and it’s such a privilege and honor to be a face of a brand that has such a good reputation where there are incredible and hardworking teams of Independent Beauty Consultants behind their products.

A few years ago, I was balancing the books for my sister-in-law’s mother, Annette Buchholz, who was and is currently a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant in Redding, CA. She told me that I should get started as a consultant and I could learn the in’s-and-out’s from her. I started selling Mary Kay and loved it. I loved the parties, the meetings and how incredibly driven the women were in making their businesses prosper. The fact that the women in the Mary Kay world actually enjoyed making women feel beautiful by enhancing their natural beauty was so refreshing and unreal. I mean, I was taught to actually take care of my customer, by teaching him/her how to use the products, follow up with him/her, and make sure s/he was happy with the product.

Furthermore, I moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue my dream of modeling and acting and was soon scouted by Monica Boselli, the founder of No Ties Management in San Diego, California. When I decided to start acting a few months ago, the first commercial I booked was the Mary Kay Compact commercial. That was the very FIRST commercial I booked. After I had booked the commercial, I told the clients that I had sold Mary Kay for a couple years and a family member was a consultant as well. They laughed. A few months later, in July, I flew to New York to shoot the new Mary Kay Nourishine Plus Lip Gloss and am now the cover girl for this month’s cover look of The Look.

I can’t even explain to you how big of an influence Mary Kay has been to me in my life. It taught me hard work, never to give up no matter how challenging life can be (in and outside your business), and to respect not only yourself, but also the others around you. Mary Kay is a team. We are all a team and we all are so fortunate to work for such a reputable brand that has been around for so many years.

I can’t tell you how happy I am to be able to be the face of such an amazing line of products. Thank you so much for everything.

    Sincerely,
    Jessica Cook

Jill WeddingToday’s guest blogger is Jill Wedding.  Jill has worked for Mary Kay Inc. for more than 20 years. She works closely with the top leaders within the Mary Kay independent sales force and shares her thoughts on the influence that the Mary Kay opportunity has on the children of Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultants.

We often hear from past and present Independent Beauty Consultants about the benefits of selling Mary Kay products.  Yes, the pink Cadillac is a swanky little incentive but we are talking beyond the prizes, beyond the financial benefits and beyond the recognition.  We are talking about the benefit to an Independent Beauty Consultant’s child.

So many children learn valuable skills from watching their mothers run their Mary Kay businesses.  Goal setting, leadership development, team work and entrepreneurial skills are just a few of these life skills.  Take a look at this video to hear a few Mary Kay “Kids” discussing what they learned about life from their mother’s Mary Kay business.  If you are a Mary Kay Kid, share your memories with us.

  • You Are Beautiful

    by: Posted

As the busy holiday shopping season ends and food and toy drives bring in their last donations, many survivors of domestic violence devoted  their full, but limited, resources to making their children’s holiday memorable, living constantly selfless lives. The Mary Kay “You Are Beautiful” holiday celebrations put these women at the center of attention for a day and focuses solely on their wants and needs to be beautiful inside and out. In Los Angeles, Dec. 8, women of Rainbow Services were surprised with a visit by Hollywood celebrity, Alexa Vega (Spy Kids franchise and From Prada to Nada), who shared personal stories of the six strong women in her family. The events were hosted by Mary Kay Independent National Sales Directors, Lupita Ceballos in Los Angeles and Ada García-Herrera in Washington. The parties provide survivors with building blocks of self-confidence to help them emerge from their trying journey stronger and more beautiful than ever.

  • Helping Children Heal

    by: Posted

The prevention of domestic violence is one of the most important issues we support.  Not only do we provide $3 million in grants to domestic violence shelters each year through The Mary Kay Foundation, we also fund and support a number of programs addressing domestic violence.  Perhaps one of the most unique programs we fund is the Nature Explore Classroom.

Nature Explore Classrooms are outdoor learning spaces designed to include nature in the daily lives and learning of children.  Research shows that nature buffers the impact of life stress on children and helps them deal with adversity.  It also helps reduce or eliminate anti-social behavior such as violence, bullying and vandalism – all of which are common in children who have witnessed abuse.

Nature Explore Classrooms are traditionally constructed in areas where children can normally access including schools, parks and child care centers.  However, children who are currently residing at a women’s shelter with their mothers, rarely have access to these locations because of the precarious nature of protecting a mother and a child from the potential abuser.  Bringing these outdoor environments to domestic violence shelters provides these children with yet another powerful tool to help them deal with the horrendous abuse they may have witnessed.

Since 2009, Mary Kay has funded 13 Nature Explore Classrooms in nine states.  We are proud to announce 2011 Nature Explore Classroom Recipients.

  • 6 Ways to Not be a “Green Grinch” this Holiday Season

    by: Posted

Today’s blog post comes from Mary Kay’s Pink Doing Green team. Employees from a variety of departments make up the Pink Doing Green team. The team focuses on seeking opportunities to improve Mary Kay’s environmental performance and continuously strives to find ways to be even more sustainable and green.

    1. Seek out eco-friendly gifts. Everything from fair trade coffee to recycled jewelry. Get creative. Many non-profits and organizations have special programs aimed at holiday shoppers. Be sure to think about how your gift could make a difference.  Check out this article on 11 ways to give without giving stuff. http://www.thedailygreen.com/living-green/alternative-gifts#fbIndex1

    2. You’ll be mailing gifts and hopefully receiving some, too. Remember to recycle boxes and packaging peanuts. Even better… use the bio peanuts from your Mary Kay product orders instead of traditional packing peanuts. They dissolve in water and can go right down the drain. Plus, you can put them in your compost pile.

    3. Reduce your consumption.  Did you know that not all wrapping paper is recyclable? Wrap your gift in newspaper, fabric or other materials you already have. The recipient of your gift will appreciate the thought and the creativity.

    4. Your energy bill could soar from all of those beautiful holiday lights. Be sure to look at green options as you decorate. LED holiday lights use 90 percent less energy than conventional holiday lights.

    5. Each year, 10 million Christmas trees end up in the landfill. Did you know that you can recycle your tree? Visit www.earth911.org to find the tree-recycling program near you.

    6. Getting a new cell phone, computer or TV for the holidays? You can recycle the old ones. Recycling electronics prevents hazardous elements like mercury, cadmium and lead from ending up in our landfills.  Many large electronic stores will take your old TV and computer. Plus, many companies and organizations will take old cell phones for recycling including The Mary Kay Foundation.  Click here for more details on The Mary Kay Foundation’s cell phone recycling program.

Hope these tips added a little green to your holidays. Happy Holidays from the Pink Doing Green team!

Today’s guest blogger is Dr. Beth Lange, Chief Scientific Officer.  Dr. Lange leads Mary Kay’s Research & Development division and due to her passion for nature also champions our corporate environmental sustainability efforts.

Happy Holidays!  I love this time of year.  It is a joyous time to spend with family & friends celebrating.  I want to share with you some of the things we are celebrating at Mary Kay, and one of them is Pink Doing Green.  2011 was a stellar year for our Pink Doing Green programs.

We started off the year with the Mary Kay Global Month of Service, leading up to the celebration of International Women’s Day.  Around the world, Mary Kay employees, customers and Independent Beauty Consultants donated their time and energy to make our world a better place.  Together we planted butterfly gardens, cleaned parks and picked up litter along roadways.  In April, we had a blast celebrating Earth Day with our local communities.  We shared our Pink Doing Green message with several thousand Dallas-area students and residents.  And our Western US Distribution Branch spent the day planting trees in their community. In July we challenged our Independent Sales Force to help us with our recycling efforts and bring their used product caps and cases to Seminar.  These are the plastic flip-top caps and color refill cases that are not recyclable in every community.  The Sales Force responded to the challenge with a bang!  We recycled over 52,000 caps and cases from this single event!  Those are 52,000 caps and cases that will not go to a landfill!

And speaking of not putting anything in a landfill, we hit an enormous milestone in our goal to be zero-landfill at our Global Manufacturing Facility.  At Mary Kay, we want to make your products in an environmentally responsible way.  With zero-landfill, our goal is not to send any manufacturing waste to a landfill.  Have you ever seen a crowd cheering a garbage truck?  At Mary Kay we did just that when we hit this milestone.  This garbage truck was special.  It was not going to a landfill, but to a facility that would turn our trash into energy!  Mary Kay employees lined the street with green pom-poms and noisemakers and cheered their hearts out.

I hope you had a fabulous 2011.  I look forward to sharing more exciting news about Pink Doing Green in 2012!

Many of you are out and about shopping and getting ready for the holiday season. Planning family meals. Picking out the perfect gift for your friends.  Even ‘assisting’ Santa with your child’s wish list. This holiday spirit stems from that desire to make someone else’s day a little brighter, a little happier, a little merrier. To help bring a little holiday cheer to women and children in need, we’ve donated more than $25 million in cosmetic products, gift items and toys over the last seven years through the Today Show’s Annual Toy Drive. Check out this video about this year’s donation.

Our commitment to helping others is truly one of our core principles. The holiday season provides even more opportunities for us to help people in need by partnering with other great organizations. For Thanksgiving, we partnered with Operation Blessing to donate 6,000 bags of Mary Kay products during its annual Thanksgiving meal distribution in Washington D.C. and Jacksonville, FL. Operation Blessing provides disaster relief aid and also has partnerships with the NFL to provide meals to needy families during this time of year.  For the Christmas season, we are partnering with the Today Show to donate items for its annual Toy Drive. Be sure to tune in to the Today Show this Friday during the 9 a.m. hour to see Mary Kay’s annual donation.

  • Thanking my Grandmother

    by: Posted

Today’s guest blogger is Ryan Rogers, Mary Kay Ash’s grandson. Ryan is the Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and has worked for Mary Kay Inc. since 2000. Ryan shares with us his thoughts on his grandmother’s legacy on the 10th anniversary of her passing.

It was 10 years ago today that we lost Mary Kay Ash. To many of you she was a friend, leader and role model -- but to me, she was Grandmother. When I think about my grandmother, I can’t help but recall what a positive influence she was on my life.  Her words of encouragement when I was young taught me to dream big with a never say never attitude.  The same “you can do it” inspiration she learned from her mother, she passed on to my family, in fact, she passed it on to the world!  Together, we are all part of extending her legacy to generations to come through an incredible company that will flourish for decades to come.

Grandmother was a trailblazer for her generation. To start a company in the early 60’s that gave women numerous opportunities, took courage and business savvy. But it’s the legacy she has left that has resulted in millions of other women also becoming trailblazers and leaders. This success is based on the fact that Grandmother started her company on principles that would sustain a business for a lifetime.

In the last ten years since Grandmother passed, we’ve grown from a company with some 800,000 independent beauty consultants to more than 2 million. We’ve expanded our operations and have Mary Kay products sold in more than 35 countries around the world. All of this stemmed from her dream marketing plan, $5,000, 9 independent beauty consultants and hard work -- a lot of hard work.

The interest in helping others and that hard work ethic are traits I witness every time I encounter a fellow employee. I’m really not too different from all of the other people who work for Mary Kay Inc. Like them, I’m grateful to work for a great company that has committed itself to enriching women’s lives. I enjoy working with our independent sales force and I love the spirit of team work. The only difference is that I get to work for such a great company that was founded by such a great woman who was the best grandmother I could have ever had.

Join me this week of Thanksgiving and share why you are grateful for Mary Kay Ash.

  • Lending a Hand

    by: Posted

Today’s guest blogger is Murray Smith. Murray is the Vice President of International Sales and has worked for Mary Kay since 1983. Murray is a core volunteer with Habitat for Humanity Dallas and shares his thoughts on the importance of helping others.

Giving back to the community is not only what we have always done as a company at Mary Kay, but as employee for nearly 30 years, it is also a passion that I share with other employees and independent sales force members from around our Mary Kay world. Habitat for Humanity is just one of the many organizations out there that is trying to make our world a better place. Their mission of providing affordable shelter for others and their need for volunteers to make it happen, seemed to be the right fit for me. Their mission excited me and volunteering was the easiest thing I think ever done.

It was simple how it started. I owned a hammer. I had some basic skills. And I knew I could make a difference in some small way. Now, many homes later, I’m proud to say I am a Core Volunteer for Habitat for Humanity in Dallas.

You see being a volunteer you have the opportunity to work with others that share the same passion as you. All of those Habitat veterans were eager to share their knowledge and skills with me, for which I am now eternally grateful. I look forward to working with our Whole House Crew (named because we work on the house from the ground up) every time I go out.  We laugh, work extremely well together as a team and help each other develop skills. They helped my skills evolve.  And now, like those before me, I teach others the basic skills that all starts with lending a hand. But the reward is not what you get from volunteering, it comes from the results you see from giving. Working shoulder to shoulder with a home owner. No words need to be spoken because I can see it in their eyes every time. And that for me says it all.

Leaving my home in the early morning while still dark. Dressed in multiple layers because you really don’t know what the day’s weather will bring. A #10 breakfast combo from a familiar fast food place accompanied by two large coffees (double cream of course.) Travelling to a neighborhood that only MapQuest and Habitat volunteers can find. Taped fingers as if I was playing on the line of scrimmage for the Cowboys. Anticipating the aches and pains that follow a day of hard work and knowing that same feeling will linger into Sunday and perhaps Monday. The mild inconveniences don’t even matter because its all worth it when you see the smiles in the homeowners’ eyes.

While my thumb still has evidence of a past altercation with a hammer, I’m happy to report that this past weekend with Habitat was a huge success.  A success shared with many of my Mary Kay and Core Volunteer friends. Everyone brought their enthusiasm to lend a hand. And as I do every time, we witnessed the heartfelt thanks in the eyes of another home owner. Making a difference in someone’s life is the most rewarding hard work I do.
