Last month, we celebrated World Environment Day alongside other corporate and community leaders in sustainability in more than 100 countries around the globe. It’s a day to encourage worldwide awareness and actions for the protection of the environment – something Mary Kay has been committed to for decades.
On the heels of the holiday, Mary Kay is partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation in the launch of its new Time for Trees initiative. As a founding member of the Evergreen Alliance, Mary Kay has made a long-term commitment to help the Arbor Day Foundation reach a BIG goal -- planting 100 million trees in forests and communities around the globe and inspiring 5 million tree planters to help carry the mission forward by 2022 – the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day.
Every year, World Environment Day is organized around a theme that draws attention to a particularly pressing environmental concern. The theme for 2019 is air pollution. While air and water pollution threaten the globe, The Arbor Day Foundation is committed to addressing these problems by launching an unprecedented undertaking in its Time for Trees initiative to create worldwide recognition and use of trees as a solution to global issues.
The initiative is new but Mary Kay’s partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation is a decade-long relationship. In ten years of collaboration with the Arbor Day Foundation, Mary Kay has planted one million trees across the United States – with more than 500,000 planted after wildfires devastated Bastrop State Park in Texas. Beyond this critical reforestation work, Mary Kay sponsored the development of 20 Nature Classrooms to immerse children in nature at domestic violence shelters across the country as part of a first-of-its-kind program.
As Director of Continuous Improvement at Mary Kay Inc., I had the privilege of attending the official launch of the Time for Trees initiative recently in New York City. Recognizing that communities’ benefit from the environmental impact of trees and that people benefit from the healing aspects of nature, Mary Kay has built a long-standing relationship with the Arbor Day Foundation.
In celebration of Arbor Day this year, Mary Kay also partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to plant one tree for every social media post featuring “#ArborDay” – up to 25,000 trees to improve the quality of life in communities across the country and around the world. At Mary Kay, we understand that every choice we make today impacts our future. It’s our responsibility to drive sustainable business practices, including continuously striving to make our supply chain, operations and product offering environmentally friendly. We call it Pink Doing Green.
Air pollution has become a growing global concern and recent findings reveal that air pollution negatively impacts skin aging. Last month, Mary Kay presented findings related to the effects of pollution on skin health at the prestigious Reunión Anual de Dermatólogos Latinoamericanos (RADLA) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. During the 37th annual RADLA conference, leading skin care experts from around the world convened to explore various topics including the impact of external environmental aggressors on skin health.
In 2018, Mary Kay sponsored an exclusive symposium titled "Pollution and Skin Health" at the prestigious International Investigative Dermatology (IID) Meeting. The meeting occurs once every five years and brings together scientists from across the globe highlighting the latest in cutting edge science in dermatology.
As an international leader in both skincare innovation and corporate social responsibility, we believe sustainability is not just good for the environment – it’s good for business and for our Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultants around the world. Pink Doing GreenSM is our promise to create and maintain sustainable business practices, while also partnering with organizations whose mission is to preserve and beautify our communities globally.
We’re proud of our continued partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation as we work to leave a positive legacy of sustainability on World Environment Day and every other day!
